This is a view of The Homestead from the end of the unfinished Sinclair Grove, NW11

The area was transformed from the year 1907. The opening of the underground as far as Golders Green crossroads that year caused the rapid transformation from farmland to suburb. Ribbon development along the main road got as far as Highfield Avenue by the end of 1907 and continuted as far as the River Brent by 1912.

This photo epitomises that transformation - we see the end of Sinclair Grove with the unnamed Western Avenue awaiting their houses. Meanwhile, across the fields we can still see "The Homestead" - a large house down a track from Golders Green Road until that year but now being dismantled. The fields beyond remained in place for a few years until after the First World War.

Then the Northern Line was extended to Edgware in the early 1920s and the last of the countryside around Brent Cross disappeared under the tracks of the bulldozers.

Post by Lynne Hqapgood: Hutton Grove, N12

I have a question rather than a comment. When was 80 Hutton Grove built? My parents, Eddie and Margaret Hapgood, lived at 80 Hutton Grove from 1934 until sometime during the war,and I would love to know if they moved into a new-build house during the big suburban expansion in the 1930s. Does anyone out there know?! I visited very recently to see the road and the frontage of the house for the first time.

Post by John Dye: Cool Oak Lane, NW9

I lived at Queensbury Road, Kingsbury during World War II and used to play regularly along the edge of the Welsh Harp. About halfway along Cool Oak Lane on the south side was a pond we used to call Froggy Pond. It was the only place I ever saw a water scorpion, Nepa cinerea.
At the end of the war, all the street air raid shelters were knocked down and the rubble was piled up on the ground south of the Cool Oak Lane bridge, on the Hendon side. I remember that this heap of rubble became infested with rats and I used to watch them from the bridge. I was told that an old house on the south side of Cool Oak Lane (Woodfield House?) was once owned by the wife of Horatio Nelson. I think it later became the nurseries for plants grown for the Hendon parks.

Let Shamima Begum come back, say Bethnal Green residents
People in area where schoolgirl lived before she joined Isis say she should be allowed to returnIn Bethnal Green, the east London area where Shamima Begum and two other schoolgirls lived before they travelled to Syria to join Islamic State, there was a widespread feeling that she should be allowed to return to the UK.Begum, along with Kadiza Sultana and Amira Abase, aged between 15 and 16 at the time, from Bethnal Green Academy, now Mulberry Academy Shoreditch, left the UK in February 2015 and joined Islamic State. They took the same route as Sharmeena Begum, also from the same school, three months earlier. Golders Green

Golders Green was a rural hamlet at the crossroads of Finchley Road and North End Road until the arrival of the tube in 1907.

Golders Green station was opened by the Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway (CCE&HR, now part of the Northern Line) on 22 June 1907. It was one of the railway's two northern terminals (the other being at Archway) and was also the site of the railway's depot.

Before World War I plans were made to extend the CCE&HR north from Golders Green to Hendon and Edgware to open up new areas of the Middlesex countryside to development and to create a source of new passengers. The war postponed the construction of the extension and work did not begin until 12 June 1922. The first section of the extension, as far as Hendon Central opened on 19 November 1923.
