The road was named after one of Cromwell’s sons who lived here.

Cromwell Road began as a rural path between market gardens and known as Red Field Lane. After it became owned by the James and Robert Gunter, the Gunter family developed the area in the 1860s and repurposed Red Field Lane as Cromwell Road.
