First Street was so-named as it was the first street to be laid out on the Hasker estate.

In 1839 William Davies, a market gardener, had taken over the remainder of the lease of the market garden, known as Green Lettuce Gardens.

In 1845 Lord Cadogan leased to Davies just under an acre of the land within Green Lettuce Gardens for 99 years for building.

Between 1845 and 1848 Davis issued building leases for First Street for the remainder of his 99-year term.

In 1851 Davis assigned a small sliver of land at the south end of First Street to James Miles, the owner of houses in Richards Place, to form gardens or forecourts to Miles’s houses.
