Gunter Grove is named for the famous West End confectioners, the Gunter Brothers.

The development of about sixty acres stretching from Earl’s Court Road was undertaken by the Gunter Brothers as most of the land in the area belonged to the Gunter family.

James Gunter began buying land in the area from 1801 until his death in 1819. His son, Robert, began the development in the 1840s. After Robert’s death in 1852, his sons, Robert and James continued the expansion of the development into the Redcliffe Estate area.
