Holgate Avenue was originally known as Britannia Place before being renamed to Holgate Avenue in 1931.
Britannia Place - dating from 1865 - was alternatively known as Britannia Street between 1866 and 1883 and named after the Britannia beer shop.
The new name Holgate is associated with Robert Holgate, who served as the Archbishop of York from 1545 to 1554. The Archbishops of York had a house at York Place nearby since the mid-15th century and owned significant land in the Battersea area until the 1850s.
Apart from the association with the Archbishop, the name Holgate was also a local surname during the 16th and 17th centuries.
