Bywater Street was built in the 1850s on the site of a nursery.
Bywater Street was originally called Addison Place. It was ultimately named after Thomas Bywater who was a minor property owner in the area.
John le Carre’s character George Smiley in the 1974 novel Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy lived at 9 Bywater Street.
The shop on the west side was Beaton’s, a bakery, between 1913 until the 1990s.
