Orkney Street was built by Edward Pain in 1863.

It was laid out on the boundary of an agricultural land called Birds Hedge Shot. Its three acres had belonged to Thomas Ponton in 1839. The land was purchased on 6 November 1862. The building plan was approved in January 1863 by the Metropolitan Board of Works.
