Amberley Road was formerly lined by canalside wharves.

Westbourne Manor was a house on Harrow Road, built over in 1867. Amberley Road with its timber wharves was built along the canal bank replacing it. Lord John Russell, the statesman, was created Viscount Amberley. The Lord Amberley pub here was opened in about 1861.

The western end of Amberley Road retains a Victorian terrace.
