The name of Bloomsbury Place is derived from William Blemund.

Back in the day when rolling tobacco was a thing your granddad did, the ’Old Holborn’ brand was top of its game.

William Blemund was Lord of the Manor at the time of Henry III.

After passing through several hands the local manor came into the possession of Henry Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton, Shakespeare’s patron. It passed to his granddaughter, Lady Rachel, who by her marriage to William, Lord Russell, brought it into the Bedford family’s possession.
