One of two Silver Streets in the area along with Park Street and Peter Street became Cephas Street in 1865.
Cephas Street incorporated the southwest end of Devonshire Street in 1937.
The section of Bancroft Road between Braintree Street and Globe Road was closed in stages in 1948-49 for a new housing estate. This left the part between Cambridge Heath Road and Braintree Street separated from that to the east of Globe Road. A new direct link between this and Cephas Street was built in 1949 and the disconnected western end of Bancroft Road renamed as an extension of Cephas Street in 1949.
