Chitty Street runs between Charlotte Street and Whitfield Street.
It was originally known as North Street and marked the southern border of the Bedford Estate on the western side of Tottenham Court Road.
Plots on the north side of the street were leased to builder William Gowing in 1776. All the original buildings in the street have been replaced with modern buildings.
Chitty Street was renamed in 1885 in honour of the Chitty family, Joseph and his sons Joseph, Thomas and Edward, all distinguished Victorian legal writers. Joseph Chitty the elder, the author of many legal books, died in Conway Street, close to Chitty Street, in 1841, and his most talented son, Thomas (1802-1878), lived in nearby Gower Street.
