Marylebone - so good they named it once but pronounced it seven different ways.

Marylebone is an area in the City of Westminster North of Oxford Street and South of Regents Park. Edgware Road forms the western boundary and Portland Place forms the eastern boundary with the area known as Fitzrovia.

Marylebone gets its name from a church, called St Mary's, that was built on the bank of a small stream or bourne called the Tyburn. The church and the surrounding area later became known as St Mary at the bourne, which over time became shortened to its present form Marylebone.

Today the area is mostly residential with a stylish High Street. It is also notable for its Arabic population on its far western border around Edgware Road.

Marylebone station, opened in 1899, is the youngest of London's mainline terminal stations, and also one of the smallest, having opened with half the number of platforms originally planned.

Originally the London terminus of the ill-fated Great Central Main Line, it now serves as the terminus of the Chiltern Main Line route.

The underground station is served by the Bakerloo Line, opening on 27 March 1907 by the Baker Street and Waterloo Railway under the name Great Central (following a change from the originally-intended name Lisson Grove). It was renamed Marylebone in 1917.

I have always wondered why my Grandmothers brother had "Vere" as his second name. Was it a common name back in the day ?

I have found this very interesting to read. My family resided in the area at the beginning of the 1800's, first at Circus Street (now Enford St) , listed in 1826 on a baptism held at St Mary's Bryanston Square (Charlotte Allaway b.1826).
The family then moved to 2 Nelson's Place - again found in the St Mary's baptism records of their daughter b. Nov 1827 and listed as her death place in Feb 1829.

Nelson's Place I can't find listed anywhere BUT, I believe it was the previous name to Virgil Place.....as the next child born (another Charlotte) was at 2 Virgil Place. Could be correct?

The Allaway family (namely John a lamplighter and his wife Jemima), resided at 2 Virgil Place for the next 40 +years at least, with their son (my grandfather) Charles Allaway b. 1841 listing 2 Virgil Place on his marriage certificate on 30 July 1865.

War damage reinstatement plans of No’s 11 & 13 Aldine Street
Whilst clearing my elderly Mothers house of general detritus, I’ve come across original plans (one on acetate) of No’s 11 & 13 Aldine Street. Might they be of interest or should I just dispose of them? There are 4 copies seemingly from the one single acetate example. Seems a shame to just junk them as the level of detail is exquisite. No worries if of no interest, but thought I’d put it out there.

No 36 Upper East Smithfield
My great great grandfather was born at No 36 Upper East Smithfield and spent his early years staring out at a "dead wall" of St Katharine’s Docks. His father was an outfitter and sold clothing for sailors. He describes the place as being backed by tenements in terrible condition and most of the people living there were Irish.

Name origin
Interestingly South Lambeth derives its name from the same source as Lambeth itself - a landing place for lambs.

But South Lambeth has no landing place - it is not on the River Thames
