Originally known as Back Road, Liverpool Road traversed open countryside for much of its early existence.
Liverpool Road formed one of three thoroughfares, alongside Upper Street and Essex Road, that met at the Angel Inn. This route served as a long-established path for travellers entering and leaving London.
A turnpike tollgate was established near the Angel Inn at Islington village’s entrance in 1761, later relocating twice due to safety concerns. In 1766, Parliament designated another tollgate site at Liverpool Road’s northern end, where it meets Holloway Road.
Suburban growth began in the late 1760s with Paradise Row’s construction at Liverpool Road’s northern extremity. Following the Napoleonic Wars, population growth increased demand for building land near London. From the 1820s, Barnsbury plots were leased for construction, triggering widespread speculative development.
Liverpool Road’s developments occurred on fields owned by various parties, resulting in an unusual array of subsidiary names for the area.
