Parsons Green is both a road and the name of the green bounded by it.

Parsons Green is bounded on its three sides by the New King’s Road, the A308 and Parsons Green Lane. It is named after the rectors of the parish of Fulham whose residence once adjoined this land - subsequently, the name was adopted for the district.

From the late 17th century, the area surrounding the green became the site for fine houses and grounds built by merchants and the gentry within easy distance of London. A number of Georgian houses have survived, some of them replacing earlier Tudor and Elizabethan buildings.

An annual fundraiser called ’Fair on the Green’ is held on the green.

Fulham F.C. had their ground in Parsons Green for two years from 1889.

Philbeach Gardens Resident (Al Stewart)
Al Stewart, who had huts in the 70s with the sings ’Year of the Cat’ and ’On The Borders’, lived in Philbeach Gdns for a while and referenced Earl’s Court in a couple of his songs.
I lived in Philbeach Gardens from a child until my late teens. For a few years, on one evening in the midst of Summer, you could hear Al Stewart songs ringing out across Philbeach Gardens, particularly from his album ’Time Passages". I don’t think Al was living there at the time but perhaps he came back to see some pals. Or perhaps the broadcasters were just his fans, like me.
Either way, it was a wonderful treat to hear!

The Bombing of Nant Street WW2
My uncle with his young son and baby daughter were killed in the bombing of Nant Street in WW2. His wife had gone to be with her mother whilst the bombing of the area was taking place, and so survived. Cannot imagine how she felt when she returned to see her home flattened and to be told of the death of her husband and children.

My former partner, actor Malcolm Davey, lived at Raleigh House, Dolphin Square, for many years until his death. He was a wonderful human being and an even better friend. A somewhat underrated actor, but loved by many, including myself. I miss you terribly, Malcolm. Here’s to you and to History, our favourite subject.

Parsons Green

Parsons Green is a mainly residential district in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

At its historic centre lie two open spaces, Parsons Green itself and Eel Brook Common. The name stems from the original village green, after the former residence of the rectors of Fulham Parish.

In 1625 there were only six rated residents for the area. By 1706, John Bowack opined in his Antiquities of Middlesex that it ’was inhabited mostly by gentry and persons of quality.’

During the 18th century, changes continued with the building of grand houses with grounds. These were largely bought by merchants and bankers from the City.

Designed by a Mr Clemence under the supervision of John Wolfe-Barry, Parsons Green station was opened on 1 March 1880 when the Metropolitan District Railway (now the District line) extended its line south from West Brompton to Putney Bridge.

The wider neighbourhood of Parsons Green is bounded by Harwood Road and Wandsworth Bridge Road, A217 road to the East and Munster Road to the West, while the Fulham Road may be said to define its northern boundary.
