Malplaquet House is a Grade II listed Georgian building at 137-139 Mile End Road in Stepney.
Malplaquet House was built in 1742 by Thomas Andrews. It was one of three houses, though only two survive today.
The four-storey structure was first occupied by a wealthy Jewish widow. From 1794 to 1833, brewer Harry Charrington lived there, making significant alterations. After Charrington’s tenure, the house was subdivided and shops were built on its front garden. The name comes from the 1709 Battle of Malplaquet, a major conflict in the War of the Spanish Succession.
Malplaquet House was damaged during the Blitz, but repairs began in 1951 after a £100 donation from the War Damage Association. The architect Richard Seifert provided new shop fronts for the house.
