Tillett Way commemorates Ben Tillett, pioneer of dockers’ unions.
As secretary of the Dock, Wharf, Riverside and General Workers’ Union, Ben Tillett led the dock strike of 1889 and that of 1911. He was a Labour MP 1917-24 and 1929-31. The strike of 1889 achieved a rate of 6d. and hour an 8d. for overtime (instead of 5d. and 6d. respectively) and the end of the system under which men were arbitrarily chosen for work by subcontractors. It was mainly Tillett’s presentation of the dockers’ case that ensured the support of influential politicians.
The name was approved in 1957 as a new road adjoining Gosset Street.
