The Piccadilly Line first opened in 1906 as the Great Northern, Piccadilly & Brompton Railway. This was one of several railways controlled by the Underground Electric Railways Company of London, whose chief director was Charles Tyson Yerkes. Yerkes died before the first section of the line opened.
