The proposed (and executed) plan for the new thoroughfare of Aldwych (1905)

This map shows the streets that the scheme replaced.

This was the final example of slum clearance by redevelopment whereby local government/landowners built new roads to “improve the area” and (some of) the previous residents turfed out had to find their new dwellings on the own. By 1905, the quite-new London County Council had gained a social conscience and this callous habit - the norm in the Victorian era - finally stopped.
