Elthorne Road, N19
Upper Holloway mosaic roundel (2021)

The classic late Victorian comic novel ’Diary of a Nobody’ was set in Upper Holloway.

Elthorne Road runs between Holloway Road and Ashbrook Road.

It follows the line of an ancient thoroughfare called variously in the past, Birkbeck Lane and Red Cap Lane.

Before 1878 it contaned a number of named terraces: Clydesdale Terrace, Cromwell Terrace, Ada Villas and Oldfield Villas and Birkbeck Road, all contructed circa 1865-6.

In 1881, it was renamed Elthorne Road and re-numbered.

From 1864 until 1947, the road contained the Ebenezer Baptist Chapel.
