Mandela Street was named after Nelson Mandela.

The street was originally called Selous Street, after Frederick Selous, a game hunter in South Africa who was born in the area. The street in the 1960s became the base of the Anti-Apartheid Movement and in 1985 it was renamed in honour of the then imprisoned ANC leader, who nine years later would become South Africa’s first democratically-elected black president.
