Tenter Ground is one of the notable streetnames of Spitalfields.

Tenter Ground was originally an open space used by Huguenot weavers. They used the space to dry the cloths they made on frames called tenters, which had hooks to pull cloth tightly so that it dried evenly and without creasing.

This process also gave us the phrase on tenterhooks - very tense and pulled tightly.

Tenter Ground become called Tenter Street and was laid out in 1810-24.

Largely obliterated, its north end survives with buildings of c1900.
