Thurloe Place is named after John Thurloe, a secretary to the council of state during the Oliver Cromwell Commonwealth.

The Victoria and Albert Museum is located at the northern end of the road. Thurloe Place begins at Brompton Road near the museum, runs past the garden square and ends at Cromwell Place.
