Waverley Grove was originally part of the Hendon Place estate.
Large houses were built in and around Parson Street during the late nineteenth century. Many of these were hidden by high walls and plantations and presented a marked contrast to the humbler terraces lower down the hill. These included Waverley Grove, built on the Hendon Place estate during the occupancy of a Mr Somerville, who laid it out after 1863.
