Manoel Road is named after the last king of Portugal.
Manoel became king in 1908. His mother had been born in Twickenham. He was 18 years old when he came to the throne after assassins had killed his father and older brother. He was deposed two and a half years later in a Republican revolution.
Fulwell Lodge became home to ex-King Manoel II of Portugal who lived here after 1913 with his German wife Princess Victoria Augusta of Hohenzolern. After his death in 1932 the estate was purchased and developed for housing.
