All Saints’ Church
The Griffin, Whetstone
All Saints’ Church was built in 1882.

Chapel Field was a field of just over eight acres and it is now covered by All Saints Church and by Loring Road.

The field to the south of the school next door was Great Chapel Field of ten acres. This ran south to Glebe Field and then to Friern Barnet Lane.

The fields were all part of the manor of Friern Barnet and Whetstone, which was leased from 1731 to 1783 by William Strode. John Bacon leased the estate in 1783, purchasing it in 1800 and it was then occupied by his son - also named John. John, the father, borrowed money, using the estate as security but died in February 1816, leaving a financial mess.

Manor Farm ran from Friern Barnet Lane to Oakleigh Road and south as far as Bethune Park and it formed part of the estate which was finally - after the finances were sorted - purchased by John Miles, a publisher, in 1851 for £6000.

The church was built in 1882 as a local replacement for the more distant St James.

Henry Miles - the first vicar and son of the builder of the church - was in his post for 50 years (1882–1932). The vicarage was a 13-bedroom house on the site of modern Cameron Close. Mr and Mrs Cameron followed on from Henry Miles in 1932 and we there themselves 27 years.
