Bloomsbury Street runs from Gower Street in the north to the junction of New Oxford Street and Shaftesbury Avenue in the south.

The name Bloomsbury is derived from a William Blemund, who was Lord of the Manor at the time of Henry III.

After passing through several hands it came into the possession of Henry Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton, the Patron of Shakespeare. It passed to his granddaughter, Lady Rachel, who by her marriage to William, Lord Russell, brought it into the Bedford Familly, who have supplied much of the nomenclature of the district.

Charlotte Street became Bloomsbury Street in 1894.
