Fort Street was formerly Duke Street.
The names of Stuart Street (Steward Street) and Duke Streets were complimentary to the King Charles II and his brother.: Gun Street runs approximately along the line of the gunnery range.
An original Fort Street referred either to the Old Artillery Ground’s previous history as an enclosed place in military use - no fort seems to have stood there. The original Fort Street disappeared under development and a new Fort Street emerged here.
