Newman Street was built in 1865 by Edward Newman, who was born Kingston in 1825.

Subsidiary names were Hope Cottages and Willmer Terrace (abolished 1871/81) and Grove Terrace (abolished 1881).

Newman Street became Fownes Street in 1937.
