Just like Dickens’ father, Amy Dorrit’s father spent some time in Marshalsea Prison for debt. Amy, or Little Dorrit, was born and raised in the prison and marries in the next door St George the Martyr church. This book is a commentary on society’s treatment of the poor and how many, such as those in debt, fell through the safety net in Victorian Britain.
