Before its was renamed and extended in 1923, Colchester Street was a side street near to the Tower of London.

Colchester Street is an old street and it is unknown when it began.

It is certainly marked on the Rocque map from the middle of the eighteenth century.

As it was extended west in 1923 to reach Seething Lane, Colchester Street was renamed Pepys Street.
