Steward Street ran further north originally that it does now.

On 13 February 1682, the Old Artillery Ground was granted to George Bradbury and Edward Noell for £5700, with a licence to build new houses.

The arrangement of their street plan was determined by the relative lack of existing roads. From Bishopsgate (Street) the only access road of any consequence had been Artillery Lane (then Artillery Street) approaching the gateway near the southwest end of the Old Artillery Ground.

A new street continued Artillery Lane in a southeasterly direction to the southernmost of these streets - Smock Alley (now the eastern end of Artillery Lane).

Three new streets ran north-south: Steward Street (formerly Stuart Street), Fort Street (formerly Duke Street) and Gun Street.
