Fulham High Street (1895) TUM image id: 1556826917 Licence:	The Fazl Mosque (English: The Grace Mosque) also known as The London Mosque, was the first purpose-built mosque in London. It was opened on 23 October 1926 in Southfields. At a cost of £6223, the construction of the mosque and the purchase of the land on which it stands, was financed by the donations of Ahmadi Muslim women in Qadian, Punjab, British India, with support from the British Muslim convert Khalid Sheldrake. It is owned by the Dean and Chapter of St Paul’s Cathedral, acting through the Church Commissioners and managed by the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Barn Elms was recorded in 1540 and was formerly the manor house of Barnes. The land and manor belonged to St.Paul’s Cathedral and in 15th century was the home of Sir John Saye, Chancellor of the Exchequer. The manor house was later the home of Elizabethan spymaster Sir Frances Walsingham. The house was rebuilt by Thomas Cartwright in 1694. The farm was just to the north of the house. The London County Council extended the estate in 1953. In the background, you can see a tall red-brick building with prominent chimneys. This was another housing estate, which was owned and run by the Peabody Trust. Previously, the site had been home to the Convent of the Good Shepherd, which closed in 1920.
