Noel Street is named after the Duchess of Portland, nee Lady Elizabeth Noel.
Elizabeth, Duchess of Portland before her marriage, she was Lady Elizabeth Noel and played a key role in redeveloping the estate in 1734. The eastern part of the street was initially named Tweed Street, likely in reference to the nearby Berwick Street. This section was laid out in 1706, and the houses constructed during this time were likely rebuilt in the 1740s. The street was later extended westward across Berwick Street to the boundary of Little Gelding’s Close. In 1912, two houses on the east side of Poland Street were demolished to connect Poland Street with the west end of Noel Street. A subtle break in the line of Noel Street still indicates the boundary between the Little Gelding’s Close and Doghouse Close landholdings.
